Why Mercator?

Gerard Mercator was a 16th century Belgian mathematician and cartographer who first solved the age old problem of how to transform the 3D world onto a 2D plane. His projections are still in use today and the Universal Transverse Mercator (UTM) projection is in frequent use around the world.  For those of you in the UK take a quick look at the "small print" at the bottom of the map legend on an Ordnance Survey map (such as the pink LandRanger series) and look for Mercator.

Oh, and by the way, Mercator is pronounced Merc-ay-tor!
